(When someone's not right for the role)
It's confronting to realise you've been enabling someone who is just not right for your business. Perhaps you thought you were being supportive of someone who is really nice, but just not getting the job done despite the help they're given. Perhaps you thought you were driving performance by retaining the person who is badly-behaved but loved by clients and makes the numbers.
The really nice underperformer and the toxic high performer are equally damaging. Your team is wondering why you're not dealing with them and the interference they create is dragging your business performance.
You are not, ultimately, helping that person grow. If you need motivation to take action, use that. Do something, in service to that person. And do it with respect and compassion.
Deal with it. Brave, clear and fair conversations are necessary. I'm not saying it's easy, so here's a bit about the first time I had to deal with it, many years ago.
